Top tips for daily detox
You don’t need to embark on a drastic fasting plan to detox your body. A few good habits incorporated into a healthy lifestyle can help you to achieve amazing results.
Here at the Detox Bible, we’ve explored some of the best and most effective ways to remove toxins from your body every day without making drastic changes. Here are our top ten tips for daily detox…
1. Fill up on fibre
Fill your plate with good sources of fibre including fresh fruit and vegetables, brown or wholegrain rice, beans, pulses and nuts. Not only will these healthy sources of fibre help to keep your blood sugar levels stable, meaning that you’re less likely to be tempted by naughty treats, they will also help your body to cleanse itself of toxins.
Here are some of the best sources of fibre to detox your body: broccoli, red peppers, almonds, chickpeas, avocado, beets, cabbage, flax seeds, apples and Brazil nuts.
2. Vitamin C
Eat plenty of citrus fruits which are rich in vitamin C – an essential component for detoxifying the body, particularly the liver. Vitamin C helps the body to produce a chemical that supports the liver in driving away toxins, whilst also neutralising the free radicals that cause damage to our cells.
3. Water, water, water
Drink plenty of plain water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated, flush out your system naturally and help your organs to cleanse your system of toxins.
As a general rule, try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day. A standard glass holds around 8 ounces, so that’s between 9 and 18 glasses of water spaced throughout the day.
Water should be your drink of choice throughout the day. You will soon see the health benefits and enjoy some of the longer term ones down the line.
4. Replace a meal each day with a detoxifying smoothie
Detoxing your body doesn’t have to be severe and drastic. By replacing just one meal each day, such as breakfast, with a detoxifying smoothie created from natural foods will help to cleanse your body, boost your metabolism and support weight management and also keep the digestive system working the way that it should.
Here’s an easy recipe formula to get you started…
2 cups of leafy greens
Choose from:
• Kale
• Dandelion
• Chard
• Romaine
• Spinach
• Bok Choy
+ 3 cups of fruit
Choose from:
• Apple
• Pear
• Melon
• Grapes
• Banana
• Avocado
• Peach
• Pineapple
• Berries
• Mango
+ 2 cups of liquid
Choose from:
• Water
• Almond milk
• Coconut milk
• Soya milk
• Coconut water
Blend up your leafy greens and the liquid first before adding your fruit. You can even try adding frozen fruit to create a chilled smoothie. Add additional ingredients, such as hemp seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, cinnamon, acai powder or cacao, if you wish to give your smoothie an extra nutritional boost.
5. Sweat out those toxins
Exercise helps to speed up the cleansing process. Whatever you prefer to do, whether it’s running, working out in the gym, walking, swimming or yoga, try to get your heart rate up for around an hour a day to aid the detoxifying process.
6. Rest & relax
Stress isn’t something that is simply ‘in our mind’. It has a huge impact on our physical wellbeing too. When we get stressed, our body releases chemicals, including adrenalin and cortisol, which put us into fight or flight mode.
Our body has to work harder to process these hormones, and when it struggles to do so, stress can impair not only our mental state, but our nervous and immune systems too. So find ways each day keep your stress levels under control, whether that’s gentle exercise, a soak in the bath or a yoga workout.
7. Replace your morning coffee with green tea
This small change can make a significant difference to how you feel. Green tea offers important antioxidants that our body needs in the most natural form. It also contains a small amount of caffeine so you will still get that morning kick if you feel that you need it, however it has far more health benefits than coffee. So by making this relatively small change, it will be well worth it.
8. Breathe deeply
Take time each day to breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system. Oxygen helps your body to absorb vitamins and nutrients more efficiently, helping to speed up the process of detoxification so try to take time each day to focus on breathing deeply.
9. Hydrotherapy at home
Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes followed by a 30 second blast of cold water. Hydrotherapy boosts your circulation, which helps to eliminate waste from your body.
When heat and cold are alternated, the body’s cells, tissues and systems are opening with heat and closing with cold. This is essentially flushing out the toxins and increasing oxygen in the body.
10. Skin brushing
Dry-brush your skin or try detox foot spas to remove toxins through your pores and to help cleanse toxins from your body.
By incorporating some or all of these tips into your daily life you’ll be giving your body a better chance to clear out toxins and chemicals before they start to build up in your system.
